Artist John Hawke presents at Not An Alternative's Occupied Real Estate installation in Exit Art on May 12, 2012. The installation was featured in Collective/Performative, the final exhibition of Exit Art’s influential 30 years as a non-profit gallery and cultural center.
John has since moved to Portugal. We miss John, and we miss Exit Art!
On June 18, 2009 internet theorist and author Clay Shirky joined us for a talk on the concepts of fork and failure in the open source process, particularly in the context of activism and creative practice. This event was part of the monthly Upgrade New York programming series, co-produced by Not An Alternative and Eyebeam. Part 2 below the jump.
"Subversive Tech and Burma's Struggle for Democracy" involved a presentation by Digital Democracy on the use of technology inside and along Burma's borders, footage from the Sept 2007 Saffron Revolution, where mobile phones and the internet allowed protesters to coordinate and publicize the largest protests seen in a generation, and a Q&A with "Stanley", a Burmese computer programmer and chairperson of the All Burma IT Students Union.
Here's some coverage of the coding party we hosted at the gallery's monthly Work at Jelly day. Coworkers and guests helped build Twitter Vote Report, a crowd-sourced election monitoring and reporting system.
Not An Alternative is a hybrid arts collective and non-profit organization with a mission to affect popular understandings of events, symbols, and history. We curate and produce interventions on immaterial and material space, leveraging the tools of architecture, exhibit design, branding, and public relations. Programs are hosted at a variety of venues, including our Brooklyn-based gallery No-Space (formerly known as The Change You Want to See Gallery).
No-Space is host to free lectures, screenings, panel discussions, workshops and artist presentations. The space also consists of a production workshop, filming studio and video editing suite. During the day it is a collaborative office space (aka coworking) for freelancers and cultural producers.
